We were saddened to hear of the earthquake that struck New Zealand late last night 90 km north of Christchurch and have been in contact with our New Zealand partners in Christchurch today, who are thankfully all fine.
As featured last night on Grand Designs New Zealand, Habitech has been working with NZ team LiteGreen Projects, to deliver a super-insulated, energy efficient and earthquake resistant home in Christchurch. With the area stretching from the Solomon Islands through Vanuatu and down to New Zealand being one of the most active seismic sites on earth, the house uses the strength of our modular panel system as part of its design to withstand the very real earthquake forces and shakes that Christchurch is subject to.
Grand Designs New Zealand aired at 8:30pm Sunday night and the 7.8 magnitude quake hit Christchurch just after midnight, so the house has now undergone an untimely live earthquake test - which we are pleased to report it has survived without a scratch - although Andrei and his family were evacuated at 2am in the face a of a tsunami warning issued for the east coast of New Zealand.
We're thankful that Andrei, Abby and Alice are now back home and that everyone involved is safe.
