Japanese Pushing The (Building) Envelope

Following the recent Emergency Shelter Exhibition at Federation Square, curated by Jun Sakaguchi and widely supported by Melbourne’s architectural community, it was interesting to see this video from Japan, looking at the issue of emergency housing.

With a greater emphasis on keeping people warm in cold climates, the project certainly takes expanded polystyrene foam (EPS) technology to the extreme. While they are relying on a very minimal coat of acrylic render to waterproof the building, we liked their consideration of fully utilising the unit’s thermal properties in a long second design life, after their initial emergency use.
