Brief:  Suburban Family Home - 3 Bedrooms + Carport

Location: Port Melbourne, Victoria

Climate:  Temperate

Architect:  Third Skin

Area: 310 m2

Situated on a quiet corner block, this new well-proportioned family size home nestles gently within the treelined streets of Port Melbourne. The inherited schematic layout has been developed closely with our client as a modern interpretation of the classic Victorian terrace, suitable for its corner location with two prominent street facades.

The challenge involved working with the South-West aspect of the block while ensuring good solar access for the spaces inside. A series of lightwells and voids have been carved into the exterior form, allowing light to access deep into spaces within. The curvilinear forms duplicated throughout the design integrate outdoor entertaining areas, stairwells and entry points all into a cohesive street façade.

The rear balcony ensures good solar access via the first floor, considering privacy for the neighbouring north facing garden and allowing sun into the large open plan kitchen and living area. A second living mezzanine enjoys the central double height space, visually linking the two levels. The design also contains three generous bedrooms with the flexibility to use one as a private office towards the front of the property. Making use of the exclusive rear laneway access, the Modern Victorian also features a privately accessed studio and double car garage. Using the Habitech Wall Panel System to deliver a well-insulated high performing fabric, this entertainer’s terrace has all the features to become a much-loved comfortable home.
