Green rooftops

Late last year, the City of Melbourne released maps that assessed every rooftop in the CBD, to determine the available space for projects such as gardens, cool roofs and solar panel installations.

Turns out that green projects cover just 7.8 out of 880 hectares of roof space.

The maps suggest that solar has the biggest potential across the city's roofs - there are already 1077 solar panel systems and solar hot-water systems installed over just a 2.4 hectare area, but the analysis found that 637 hectares of city roof space may have the capacity to house solar systems.

There's also an underutilised potential for cool roofs, which use specific building materials and paints to reflect heat - an estimated 259 hectares of roof space is suitable for these roofs.
