For anyone with an interest in renewable energy, Monday was an interesting day for Germany – producing a record solar output of 23.9 gigawatts. Norbert Allnoch, director of the Institute of the Renewable Energy Industry (IWR) in Muenster, said this met nearly 50% of the nation's midday electricity needs.
This is with Germany’s best solar site being the equivalent of our worst (in western Tasmania) and does not include wind or other renewable generation sources in Germany. As the Victorian Government is desperately trying to sell our dirty brown coal reserves before the market for it disappears, we should remember that along with mineral resources, Australia is blessed with huge solar, wind and tidal energy sources.
For those interested in smaller scale building mounted PV solar panels, the attached blog provides an interesting commentary on the the likely performance of the solar panels fitted to one of the houses featured on the UK Grand Design’s program.
